No Whispers CIC bring Lads Like Us to Lancashire

On Friday 25th  April 2025, 52 people gathered for a deeply moving and transformative event initiated by No Whispers Community Interest Company (CIC). There was a wonderful mix of volunteers, parents and carers and professionals. This event brought people together to confront difficult truths and embrace the power of healing through shared lived experiences.

At the heart of the evening were Mike and Danny, founders of Lads Like Us, an organisation dedicated to encouraging boys and men to speak openly about childhood trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Their goal: to break cycles of silence, shame and self-sabotage by replacing them with dialogue, accountability and compassion. Their message is part of a wider movement and campaign encouraging professionals and communities to #AskWhy — to remain curious about behavior rather than judgmental, understand the impact of trauma and to see beneath the surface of those who are struggling.

With humor, humility and raw honesty, Mike and Danny shared their lived experiences of trauma and the realities of its long-term impact when left unspoken. Their approach opened the room — encouraging connection, empathy and insight. Many attendees commented on the power of hearing real stories in real words, describing the session as eye-opening, emotional, and inspiring.

This impactful evening was made possible thanks to funding from the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund, which supported this vital opportunity to open community conversations around trauma, resilience and prevention within a context of safeguarding.

Progress Housing Group also played a vital role in the event, offering practical and emotional support. In collaboration with No Whispers CIC, they co-produced an informative leaflet raising awareness about Cuckooing, helping participants understand and identify this lesser-known form of exploitation. Their commitment to the community extended beyond information — they also generously provided a delicious hot pot supper, served to all 52 attendees, to create an opportunity for community connection and socialising.

The event also received valued support from Trust House Lancashire and Victim Support, two key organisations in the safeguarding and recovery. Their presence reinforced a shared commitment to prevention, protection, and survivor-centered care.

The impact of the evening was clear in the feedback received:

“Such a powerful, emotional and inspirational evening. The speakers were outstanding.”

“It really made me reflect on how we speak to the people we work with, and how important it is to ask ‘why?’ before assuming anything.”

“The atmosphere was so welcoming and honest — it felt safe to feel and to listen.”

The event successfully fostered greater understanding of how trauma affects lives and how professionals, services and communities can respond with curiosity and compassion.

Together, No Whispers CIC, Lads Like Us, Progress Housing Group, Trust House Lancashire and Victim Support created an evening where truth was told, healing was honored, and hope was shared all within a safe space and supported environment.

As we continue to raise awareness and foster safe spaces for conversations that matter, we are reminded that change starts with listening — and with the courage to Ask Why?
